Our Catering provision continues to go from strength to strength, with pupils showing real enthusiasm, creativity and commitment in both the theory and practical elements of the course.

Engagement in lessons has been particularly strong, with pupils confidently exploring key topics such as food safety, hygiene, nutrition and menu planning before applying this knowledge in the kitchen. It has been fantastic to see learners making clear links between classroom theory and hands-on practical skills.

Over the last two lessons, pupils took part in a ‘Design and Make a Smash Burger’ challenge. The brief encouraged creativity, presentation skills and thoughtful ingredient choices. Pupils researched flavour combinations, considered textures and discussed target audiences before developing their own unique burger concepts.

The results were impressive. Designs ranged from traditional classic smash burgers with homemade sauces and fresh salad garnishes, through to modern twists featuring bold flavour combinations and inventive toppings. One pupil even designed and created a dessert burger, demonstrating real imagination and confidence in thinking beyond the brief.

Throughout the project, pupils demonstrated:

  • Strong teamwork and communication
  • Safe and hygienic food preparation
  • Creativity in presentation and plating
  • Pride in the final product

The atmosphere in the kitchen has been positive and purposeful, with pupils supporting one another and taking genuine pride in their work. It is clear that the Catering programme is not only developing practical cooking skills, but also building confidence, independence and transferable life skills.

We look forward to sharing more of our pupils’ culinary creations in the coming weeks.
